Mission

Our mission is to propel Pittsburgh into the heart of the national art community by providing exhibition opportunities to emerging and mid-career artists. Our goal is three-fold: to increase the visibility of regional artists; to enhance the art community by showcasing regional artwork along with bringing national and international artists’ work to Pittsburgh; and to better serve Allegheny County by linking underserved non-art related populations with local artists to develop community based art programs which revolve around a visual art exhibition that promotes awareness through symposiums, poetry readings, workshops and performance art.

Artistic Vision

Fe gallery is known as the young, progressive art space that exhibits provocative work by talented artists in thematically based exhibitions while partnering with communities to help bring about awareness. Jill Larson, the artistic director and founder, makes the curatorial decisions. Larson selects themes based upon relevant events with topical issues, which directly affect the larger population. Fe’s exhibitions are designed as group shows, allowing more artists exhibition opportunities.

Fe gallery’s strengths lie in our vision and determination. The artistic director and curator, Jill Larson, is a visual artist herself. She approaches the exhibitions from a position of creativity and professionalism. The gallery’s reputation for presenting artwork in its best light has been recognized by the local museum community including The Mattress Factory’s curator, Michael Olijnyk and it’s director, Barbara Luderowski, both Fe advisory board members. In addition, Thomas Sokolowski of the Andy Warhol Museum has been quoted expressing his support of Fe gallery. (Note-his praise for Fe gallery listed below in the Background of Arts Organization). Our challenges, similar to those of many new non-profit spaces, are publicity and reviews; obtaining qualified interns, and fundraising. Up until this point, we have relied on personal donations for our existence, almost exclusively from the founder herself. Our most pressing challenge at hand is raising funds to allow the gallery to become self-sustaining. Since it’s inception, Fe gallery has been a completely volunteer run space, with no paid staff. Despite the lack of funds, Fe gallery has presented 20 professional exhibitions with over 300 regional, national and international artists.
